Sunderland take on bottom side Bolton on Boxing Day and many fans see it as an ideal occasion to end their eight-match winless streak.
It is an alarming record considering they are competing in the third tier, but it is evidence that Phil Parkinson simply hasn’t worked out in the north-east so far, and therefore has a lot to do to turn things around.

Many supporters are against him which makes life a lot harder, and comments suggesting that the match against the Trotters will be a tough match has only increased the animosity towards him.
There is truth behind what he says, as Bolton are fighting for their lives at the bottom. They have picked up wins recently but it would look bad if any manager overlooked the opposition’s potential to be victorious, as it could come back to bite them.
Nevertheless, some fans are up in arms at Parkinson’s comments, as shown below.
Their viewpoint is an understandable one given what happened to Wanderers over the summer. Their squad was hastily put together after huge financial problems.
Parkinson’s only two wins in 13 matches in charge of the Black Cats came against teams lingering towards the bottom of the division, and if he can’t win this encounter then time and patience could soon run out.
Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?
Fans have accused him of being too negative and suggest that if the winless run stretches to nine matches on Boxing Day, then he should depart the club, which is a fair assessment given there is little sign of things improving.
There is clearly a section of Sunderland fans, and there are some who are keen for Roy Keane to take over.
