Southampton suffered a huge loss yesterday as they were beaten by fellow strugglers Fulham, in a typical six-pointer.
The loss means Southampton are now level on points with Fulham and Cardiff City. Saints are currently 17th in the table and worryingly for the Southampton fans, look as though relegation awaits.
After the latest loss, it remains to be seen how much longer Hughes has left at the club before they eventually decide to part ways with the former Stoke City man.
Moreover, after seeing Fulham appoint Ranieri, the Southampton board must be itching to pull the plug on Hughes’ tenure.
Following the loss, Hughes acknowledged the dissatisfaction amongst the fans who had begun to chant for his sacking during the game.
The Breakdown
Despite managing to keep Southampton up last season, Southampton made a huge error in keeping Hughes on this season.
Hughes had some impressive spells with Wales and Stoke but was never the man Southampton needed to take them forward.
For most of his career he’s proven to be a poor manager and for a club that is looking to push back up to its natural mid-table position, Southampton needed a brighter, younger and better manager.
Indeed, a lot of the trouble at the club has arisen from the dismissal of Claude Puel. He may not have played free-flowing attractive football but the Frenchman did take the club to an EFL Cup Final and arguably should’ve won the game.
Time is running out at Southampton and Saints need to sack Hughes before it’s too late.
Thoughts Southampton fans?
