Matthew Elliott, Glamorgan’s Australian overseas player, will miss the remainder of the season with the county after tearing his knee cartilage in a net session, on Thursday. He will undergo knee surgery and is expected to be out of action for six to 12 weeks.This is the latest setback in a desperate season for Glamorgan, who face almost certain relegation after a disasterous run of form. Yesterday, they crumbled to another crushing defeat – at the hands of Championship leaders Nottinghamshire – by 10 wickets.John Derrick, the Glamorgan coach, told the that the team is in a tough situation: “It doesn’t rain but it pours. Now Matt is out, it’s now up to the club to review where we go from here with regards a replacement.”Elliott – who has failed to establish himself in the Australian Test side, but did make a career-best 199 at Headingley in the 1997 Ashes series – has struck 746 runs at 53.28 this season, and his experience and class will be sorely missed by Glamorgan who have yet to register a single win the County Championship.”It’s a big blow to lose such a senior batsman,” said Derrick. “But we have to weigh up whether it is worth our while getting another overseas player in.”
