According to the Mirror Gonzalo Higuain wants to join Liverpool.
The Argentine striker has been in unstoppable form this year with 36 goals from 35 games – a Serie A record – and now it appears he wants to try his hand in the Premier League.
The former Real Madrid man would get into any team in the world in his current form, and at 28 is reaching his peak years. He’s set to play Champions League football for Napoli and for large parts of the season it looked as though the Naples team could have won the Italian title.
This never came to pass and perhaps now sees it as his time to try and return Liverpool to the top.
Liverpool have Daniel Sturridge, Danny Ings, Christian Benteke and Divock Origi but, whilst they have options, only Sturridge comes close to being a world class forward. If Liverpool did decide to go for Higuain it would transform them into genuine contenders for the top four overnight, but there’s very little to suggest this deal is going to go ahead right now.
So, what if Liverpool do want another top striker but not the Argentine? Here at FootballFanCast we think this FIVE could be great alternatives…
Alexandre Lacazette
Lacazette can count himself unlucky to not be in Didier Deschamps’ French EURO 2016 squad after another stellar campaign for Lyon in Ligue 1. The young French forward can play down the middle or on the sides and his high energy game would compliment Jurgen Klopp’s tactics perfectly well. Lacazette has 23 goals in 40 games in all competitions this year and might be attracted to playing in a more competitive league given PSG’s domestic stranglehold.
Michy Batshuayi
Another young forward who has impressed in France this season, Batshuayi has been the leading light for Marseille. The Belgian – like Lacazette – has 23 goals this year in all competitions and would provide Liverpool with a bit more physical presence up top. Of course, the Reds have Christian Benteke, but he’s found playing time hard to come by and what his younger compatriot offers that he doesn’t is a bit more movement, which is obviously favourable in Klopp’s eyes.
Mauro Icardi
16 goals in 33 games has meant the 23-year-old Argentine has announced himself to be Inter Milan’s latest main striker. Icardi is a hard working centre forward with a clear eye for goal and would, again, suit Klopp’s high pressing style. He’d also dovetail nicely with Daniel Sturridge, who is still looking for a strike partner to get the best out of him, as Luis Suarez did. Icardi may not be as good as Suarez just yet, but he has bags of potential and plenty of time to become a great player in his own right.

Carlos Bacca
In the other Milan team, AC, Carlos Bacca has also had a great campaign. The Rossoneri have had a tough year, but the Colombian has done his best to carry his side. 18 goals in 38 Serie A games have seen people take note of the 29-year-old’s achievements this season and his high work rate would be a hit with Liverpool fans. Also, a relatively cheap bid may secure any potential deal for Bacca, so the Reds might look at him as a good immediate option.

Vincent Janssen
Janssen is 21-years-old but is set for huge things if this season is anything to go by. Playing for AZ Alkmaar, Janssen has scored 27 goals in 34 games in the Eredivisie. Here is a player set for a long career at the top of the game and albeit his goals have come in the Dutch league, plenty of strikers have made their name there first before playing in one of Europe’s biggest competitions. Liverpool could get him far cheaper than Higuain and it may prove to be an inspired piece of business.
